Who is the best recruiter? Is it Pete Carroll or Urban Meyer or Nick Saban? The Sporting News provides two interesting perspectives arguing for Meyer and arguing for Carroll. Each provides reasonable arguments why Meyer or Carroll is best.

The argument for Meyer, “So the best recruiters must be judged by how their players exit college as opposed to how they enter… He’s got 83 victories in eight years as a head coach, enough jewelry to fill both hands, strong graduation rates at Florida and maybe the best reputation in the game. He inked first-round NFL draft picks Reggie Nelson and Derrick Harvey, a list guaranteed to grow once the elite of these Gators start heading for the pros (Brandon Spikes, Carlos Dunlap, and maybe Tim Tebow, for starters). Beyond the winning, Meyer has pocket aces in the recruiting realm. Florida’s campus and climate, all located in the mecca of East Coast high school football, rank as huge assets…”

The argument for Carroll, “Since 2003, his recruiting classes have been ranked first (2004-06), second (2007), third (2003) and eighth (2008) by Rivals.com. This current class is ranked third, and could move up to No.1 with a late push. But those numbers don’t do this machine, this ridiculous stockpile of high school All-Americans sitting behind each other on the depth chart, near justice. Consider this: In the last five years (not counting this current recruiting class), USC has signed 25 five-star and 55 four-star recruits. That’s 80 — eighty — blue-chip recruits over a five-year period.”

The Sporting News didn’t include (at least that I could find) an argument for Nick Saban, but the best argument for Saban is that he works as hard as Urban Meyer and Pete Carroll, but has turned in top recruiting classes at more than one school. But it would be almost impossible to pick a winner between these three coaches because each does a superb job every year on the recruiting trail. Though the argument made for Carroll is very compelling.

Excluding recruiting giants like Lane Kiffin, Gene Chizik and UAB’s Neil Callaway, who would you rank the best recruiter Urban Meyer or Pete Carroll?

  1. It’s not hard to recruit to a program competing for national championships year in and year out. Doing so at a program that has been in the muck and mire for the better part of the last twenty-five years is much harder. Therefore, given what he has already chalked up in his first 2 1/2 recruiting classes, you have to give the nod to Saban.

  2. 1. Urban Meyer

    2. Nick Saban
