Nick Saban is a jerk. He’s so much of a jerk, he might just return to Miami and the Miami Herald has the details.

Miami’s worst nightmare — the return of coach Nick Saban to Dolphin Stadium — is but 60 minutes away from being a reality. …
Now, less than two years removed from his infamous statement — ”I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” — Saban is one win away from returning to Dolphin Stadium with his new team and new life.

Also in this story, it is nice to see the Christian virtue of forgiveness on display.

Shortly after Saban unseated Shula as the Crimson Tide’s coach, St. Thomas Aquinas Athletic Director George Smith sent letters to University of Alabama athletic director Mal Moore and University of Alabama president Robert Witt informing them that Alabama was not welcome at St. Thomas any longer. …

”That’s in the past and I don’t want to bring up stuff that might turn into something,” Smith said.

“It never had anything to do with Saban. It has to do with the University of Alabama. And, yes, it still stands.”

I’m sure such devotion to grudge holding would make St. Thomas Aquinas happy. I’m sure it makes Christ happy to have such pettiness associated with a school training young people in His name. Nothing says love your neighbor like barring him from your property.

  1. you know, as a miami dolphins fan since grammar school, this stuff really bothers me.

it bothers me because in the end, both parties benefitted.

of course, alabama’s benefit is obvious.

and miami got parcells. everything this guy touches turns to gold. (eventually)

in saw the whole don shula thing coming back in the mid-nineties. of course, as a ‘bama fan i’ve had the unique experience of the turmoil after coach bryant’s death. and the fanbase down there looks at shula the way we look at bryant.

shula’s pettiness after his son was released caught me off guard. i thought he had more class.

but if you follow the dolphins at all you have to say parcells and sporano seem to have things moving in the right direction.

can’t we all just get…………er, forget i said that.

  2. The problem I have with St. Thomas Aquinas has more to do with the fact that they are limiting the choices of prospective college athletes. More than likely Alabama is not going to go down to Central Florida and pull an elite prospect, but a school has no right to limit a potential athletic scholarship to any student.

This is a story about George Smith the AD at St. Thomas, and his relationship with the Shula family. He has let that relationship mislead him from what his primary task should be, which is doing what is best for his students. By being a petulant man who holds a grudge against a school he has misplaced the trust that students and parents place in him.

The sad part for Smith is that this will be an enduring part of his legacy. Smith is one of the most well known and winningest coaches in Florida High history, and yet this will be what so many people remember him for.

“Smith legendary coach and AD of St. Thomas Aquinas, FL, who once banned the University of Alabama from recruiting players at his high school…”

  3. I DON’T THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN OR HEARD OF SO MUCH HATE TOWARD ONE MAN IN MY LIFE.I WOULD LOVE TO SEAT DOWN AND SNACK ON A LITTLE DEBBIE AND MILK WITH COACH SABAN AND TALK FOOTBALL OR ANY THING HE WANTS JUST TO SEE WHAT KIND OF PERSON HE IS.REALLY[[[[[ THE MAN CAN NOT BE THAT BAD..
