AP:College presidents from about 100 of the nation’s best-known universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

Note: UA’s president Dr. Robert Witt is not one of the presidents on the list, and from a quick scan, I cannot find any SEC school. Here’s the AP story:

  1. Even if this preposterous law ever goes into effect, I give them three years of endurance before it’s booted back to 21 once again.

  2. “It is a law that the people at whom it is directed believe is unjust and unfair and discriminatory.”

I have to agree. If Uncle Sam can welcome an 18-year-old kid into the armed services, shove a machine gun in his chest and tell him to go point it at someone halfway across the world, then that 18-year-old should be able to enjoy all other rights (or privileges) of adulthood. Very simple.

  3. If your old enough to take a bullett for Uncle Sam….Sounds crazy I now…But it doesnt make any sense.I do not drink. I dont like alcohal….But if your old enough to die for your country. Shouldnt you be old enough to drinmk alcohal ?

  4. I understand the point you all are making, but allowing an 18 year old the power to purchase alcohol would be a very irresponsible move that will lead to sheer chaos. I don’t know of any 18 year old kids who actually deserves to be behind the wheel of a vehicle, more or less purchase alcohol.

  5. It does not matter if they lower it or not, they will still binge drink. A lower age limit will only make it easier for them to get it. Instead, they should prohibit Snake from his deadly daily beatdown on his liver and get him hooked on Geritol instead.

  6. I agree . It shouldnt be done…But there again, we let the young fight our wars (wich I am for ,by the way). But they cant drink a beer. Its insane. Go figure…I remember when it was 19 in Alabama, ,It was that way until about 83 or 84 . I can remember my oldest brother could buy beer when I was about 13 or 14. But I also remember my dad sending me to the store to buy cigarrettes for him wwhen I was 13,,,,in the car…Different day , huh….

  7. It won’t happen, folks. The proposal will never fall through. I’m sure somewhere the US Senate/Congress/(even)George Bush is laughing hysterically at their ignorance.

  8. I have to agree: if you are old enough at 18 to serve your country and (potentially) die for it, you ought to be able to walk into a bar and order a beer. There is nothing magical about being 21 when it comes to drinking.
