Cecil Hurt on Monday’s Paul Finebaum Radio program said the VA. Tech vs. Alabama game in Atlanta to launch the 2009 football season reamins a strong possibility due to ESPN’s interest in the game.

Hurt said ESPN’s role as a major player in college football landscape could facilitate making the game happen despite the obstacles.

If the game becomes a reality, it would be two straight seasons the Crimson Tide would launch the season in Atlanta for a neutral site game.

  1. While I like this game, i was looking forward to going to New Orleans to play Tulane next year. Hopefully they will re-schedule that one.

  2. It still could be 3 years in a row as well, as we are currently scheduled to play Duke in the GA Dome in 2010.

  3. Cap, you are so right, like the greatest coach that ever lived so humbly quoted “success on the field is about eighty five percent talent, ten percent luck and five percent coaching”. We have taken over the in state talent, might as well mop up in Ga also.

  4. But why Duke of all teams?

Playing Duke in the Dome would be a home game away from home, right?

  5. Alabama originally agreed to play a home and home series with Duke. Both teams knew that Duke’s stadium was too small for the game. They agreed to play the game at a neutral site (Georgia Dome).

The game’s attendance would count for Duke’s home attendance. This is important as you must have a certain level of attendance to be a D-I program.

  6. because we’ll get a large portion of the gate, and it won’t cost us much in the way of home games.

  7. I get the point Dave, but wouldnt you get a larger portion of the gate with a one time home game with a Duke one year and then a game against say a Ball State at home the next? Financially it doesnt make sense at first look, but I guess it would have to. Or else they wouldnt consider it.

  8. All AUtards should look at the bright side of the situation: they were the worst team in the nation in 2006 (even worse than Louisiana Monroe), and they almost beat us!

  9. Yeah and that same Alabama team who almost lost to Duke only lost to tech by one TD. What’s the difference?
