For all the J.P. Wilson haters, Wilson is getting more preseason attention. I’m curious why all the experts are putting Wilson as one of the better quarterbacks in the nation, but fans (UA and AU fans) are the most vocal critics of the senior.

(UA) TUSCALOOSA–University of Alabama senior quarterback John Parker Wilson has been named to the preseason watch list for the 72nd Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski announced today.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell. Wilson was one of 76 college football players named to the preseason watch list on Wednesday.

Wilson has been UA’s starter at quarterback in each of the last two seasons. He has thrown for 5,651 yards in his career with 37 total touchdown passes. Wilson is closing in on Brodie Croyle’s school records for career passing yardage (6,382) and career TD passes (41). Wilson also owns Alabama single-season records for total offense, total plays, pass attempts, completions and touchdowns.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in early November and three finalists for each award will be announced November 25th. The winners of the 2008 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in December. The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Harrah’s Entertainment Atlantic City on March 6, 2009.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards.

  1. I hear he’s also on the T-town PD’s “watch list” for another DUI as well.

    He can be on all the “watch lists” you want, but the boy will never play a down as a starting QB in the NFL. And that is the only “list” that truly matters.

  2. History is history. He has struggled in big game situations, has confidence problems at times, mis-reads coverage and dumps the ball a lot. The passing looks OK on paper, but check the YAK’s. He would have been a great option QB but was wasted in a pro set when we had a poor Oline. That was not his fault. By the way, one of 76 is nothing to get excited about, just more off-season filler.

  3. How is starting in the NFL the most important thing for a college football player? There have been plenty of great college players that never started in the NFL. Of course, unfortunately for JP he is no great college football player.

    I am with Daddio being on the watch list means nothing. They put every senior QB on this list. I think the most probable and best thing that could happen would be for him to be as good as he was in his sophmore season.

  6. John Parker Wilson is also on the Unitas Watch List, and was one of the Top 15 QB’s expected in the next draft by a couple of different sources, including a story on NFL.com.

    Contrary to what a few Auburn and lots of Alabama fans say, some people think Wilson has potential. Maybe. 🙂

    You DO realize that your beloved Coach Nicky dangles the NFL at EVERY kid he recruits, don’t you? He’s not exactly selling them on the “glory” of playing for UAT.

  11. It literally crushes the Barnies after getting word that an Alabama is receiving some type of positive recognition (Number 1 recruiting class>Better character/JPW on a prestigious list>won’t win).

    When Kodi Burns, the guy who gave an all-out unforgettable performance against the likes of MSU and NMSU, receives recognition, then you’re more than welcome to talk. Same thing goes with 1/2 star recruits of worthy character (whose only offer was API), then we’ll talk.

    Otherwise, suck that bottle a little harder, crybabies!

  14. And what kind of Performance did Parker Wilson give against MSU? Kodi Burns gave an unforgettable performance against the likes of Florida and Clemson as well. On top of that he was a “True Freshman” and wasn’t the starter. 007, your statement has no relevancy.   24. J.P. is a decent QB. Yes you read it right. It aint always the QBs fault when things go south. For example. Yalls line didnt protect him that well. Your recievers halfway played with half of an effort.( D.J. and K.B.).. Yeah he had a few bad series, but it wasnt all his fault. I tell you that it is sad to see people wanting to behead a 20 year old for doing something that 99.99999999% of couldnt dream of doing. Being a Q.B. in the SEC is as tough as it gets. If he gets protection and a decent effort fromm his recievers, then he could have a special year. But he wont beat Auburn.

  28. Ive been watching this overrated QB out of high school make one stupid throw after another. Sometimes he looks like Brodie Croyle…lol..and other times he looks like …He is so inconsistent at times with his decisions and throwing into coverage while other receivers are wide open. JPW..I love ya man but you must be thinking..”me, me, I got nominated.” I know youre embarrassed but maybe you can regroup and make yourself a worthy nominee.
