Rivals.com examines Ivan Matchett’s qualification for enrollment, and how it impacts the scholarship numbers for UA. Matchett brings the total Alabama players signed in the last class and enrolled in summer programs to 25. As you probably know that is the limit for new scholarship players. However, as we’ve warned for months, we expect one player to wind up on a Bryant Scholarship. Thus, as long as he doesn’t play during his first two seasons, won’t count against the 25 or 85 limits.

Of Alabama’s 32 signees, two were back-counted to the 2007 class. And five others are playing pro baseball or facing other issues like academic problems. The five included Kerry Murphy (now at Hargrave prep), Devonta Bolton (facing uncertain academic situation, but told Rivals he expects to qualify), Brandon Lewis (heading to JUCO), Destin Hood (heading to play Major League Baseball) and Melvin Ray (pro baseball too).

The numbers look set to balance out, as everyone with a brain predicted. While some morons continue to assail Saban for over-signing, it looks like normal attrition in both the signing class and the present roster won’t force Saban to cancel any innocent athletes scholarship—a charge made by some bloggers.

Technology rules
Nick Saban and teleconferencing made another appearance this time in an article by Athleticbusiness.com. The article talks about Saban’s use of videoconferencing, and how the NCAA handles legislation involving technology.

Rivals.com recruiting analyst Bobby Burton is quoted in the story, along with Geoff Silver, the NCAA’s associate director of membership services and Judy Van Horn, president of the National Association of Athletics Compliance and an associate director of athletics at the University of Michigan.

Crimson & White Roundtable

I’ve been very lax in contributing my two cents over the last couple of weeks. I’ve been living at Brookwood Hospital these last three (going on four weeks). The only good thing about the hospital stay, it should be coming to a close for my mom. I think she’ll be shunted off for some rehab by the end of the week if things move along. She still has no movement on her left side, but she is alive. And considering the severity of her stroke—that is tremendously good news.

Oh, there is one other good thing about the hospital. Brookwood has some really attractive women working here. Kudos to whoever does the hiring.

Anyway, I’ll have my answers to the roundtable questions sometime this week.

  4. Yeah, Cap, I’m glad to hear your mother is still alive. My grandfather has had three strokes in his time, and luckily he’s still alive and kicking. He’s a walking miracle and if he can do it anyone can. God bless you and her both!
