Worried about point guards? Mark Gottfried has been hard at work filling that key position. Cully Payne of Schaumburg, Illinois committed to Alabama Tuesday. According to the Chicago Sun-Times website, Payne visited Tuscaloosa and liked the campus.

“After a visit this past weekend, he fell in love with the school, its great campus life and it’s a great campus town,” said Mike Weinstein, Payne’s AAU coach at the Deerfield-based Rising Stars. “He loves that it is warm. He really likes the coach because he knows how Cully does all the little things.”

Hurt warns fans about Steele
Cecil Hurt warns basketball fans that having Ronald Steele back doesn’t guarantee Ronald Steele is back into All-conference form.

One thing is certain. Steele is not, at this moment, fully returned to the form he was in at the end of the 2006 season…

If Steele had recaptured that magic while sitting out last season, we wouldn’t be having this discussion because he would have been a sure-fire first-round draft choice. If that were the case, he, like Hendrix, would be gone.

But it’s not the case. The question now is, could it be the case again?

Hurt’s point is legitimate.

What it has Tide fans pondering: Does this give Gottfried another excuse if the Tide collapses?

  1. or let Gottfried be the recruiting cordinator for both basketball and baseball.

No doubt he is a great recruiter and that is what Jim Wells lacks.

Overall I like Gottfried, I think he has brought the basketball program back. Although he just can’t seem to get them over the edge.
