How to get ahead—South Park style

F ans of South Park were treated to what could have been the most conservative, perhaps reactionary show ever to air on television. Last night’s show made Archie Bunker look like a liberal. And that is the charm of South Park, they’ll gore any ox. Screw political correctness, like Aristophanes these guys have a conservative streak.

Last week, Canadians were the source of humor. This week transsexuals, science and Bill Belichick were treated with derision. It is the Belichick theme that has something to do with sports. Unfortunately, the South Park creators have a point with their take on how the public rewards cheating. Take Cartman’s sage advice to minority students: If you cheat and fail then you are a cheater. If you cheat and succeed then you are savvy.

Cartman even helpfully provided an excuse if you get caught cheating by citing Belichick’s excuse: “I misinterpreted the rules.”

South Park even explained why the Patriots lost the Super Bowl, according to Cartman:

Just before the last Super Bowl, Bill Belichick gathered his football players and said let’s win this one for real… Just this one time. Let’s not cheat. You know what happened? They lost.”

You can watch the entire episode here. Warning it is for adults only, and contains coarse language.

I’d be interested in what people think. Do sports fans reward cheaters? Why punish Pete Rose, but let Barry Bonds hold a homerun record? Does this same logic apply to college too?

I think it depends on how PR savvy they are. Belichick is a great coach, but when you listen to him speak, you need 10 cups of coffee to stay awake.

The whole Rose-Bonds thing comes down to who got caught and who didn’t, like Cartman said.

Cartman has an amazing ability to be correct. Remember when the film festival came to South Park. Cartman described “art films” as a bunch of gay cowboys sitting around eating pudding.

Then BAM! A couple of years later there was Brokeback Mountain.

    Cartman is amazingly perceptive.
