ESPN’s First Take featured Wendell Hudson during its Black History Month spotlight Thursday morning at about 9:50 a.m. CST.

Hudson’s comments covered his experiences at Alabama; he was the first African-American scholarship athlete at Alabama. He now serves as an Associate Director of Athletics at UA.

“The most important thing I remember about that time was that I had a great time here at Alabama. The most important thing to me as a young athlete was that I was treated like everyone else—all the other athletes at that time,” Hudson said.

While it was a different time. A time of turmoil and change, Hudson said some problems with classroom instructors did not impact his play on the court. Hudson was an All-American and the 1973 SEC Player of the Year.

“I felt like I should always be at the University of Alabama,” Hudson said.

Hudson said he played a role in helping recruit other black athletes to Alabama including bringing in the first black players to the football program.
