Fullback Ivan Matchett rushed 24 times for 224 yards and three touchdowns as No. 1-ranked 5A St. Paul’s opened the season with a 42-20 win over visiting Fairhope at E.E. Delaney Stadium Friday night, according to the Mobile Press-Register.

Two other Tide commitments scored for St. Paul’s. Destin Hood caught a 41-yard touchdown pass and Mark Barron scored on a four-yard run.

Jermaine Preyear ran for 123-yards on 11 carries and scored on a 62-yard run in Week 1.

Tallahassee’s Melvin Ray caught four passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns, including a one-handed catch that went for a 35-yard score, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.

Burton Scott notched 81 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown in Vigor’s win over Alma Bryant.

Brad Smelley completed 9 of 17 passes for 134 yards and threw a 14-yard touchdown pass and ran for another, according to the Tuscaloosa News.

Courtney Upshaw recovered a fumble in Eufala’s loss to Central (Phenix City).

Michael Williams scored an offensive touchdown for Pickens County in a loss to Gordo. Williams, a defensive lineman who is big, strong and moves well also plays some offense. Last season, he made 14 receptions for about 250 yards. He scored five offensive touchdowns last season.

Ron Ingram wrote last week about the depth of linemen in the state this season. Of the Super Seniors picked by the Birmingham News, nine are linemen.
