Michael Williams is big, strong, moves well and more importantly has good character.

Those qualities earned him attention from Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide despite playing at Class 2A Pickens County High School.

Williams made 68 tackles, with 20 tackles for loss. He also netted 11 sacks, caused two fumbles and recovered two fumbles. He played strong-side defensive end for the 4-3/4-4 Pickens County scheme. Williams was named a Class 2A All-State defensive lineman by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

On offense, Williams made 14 receptions for about 250 yards. He scored five offensive touchdowns, including two long runs off the reverse.

“He has good moves for his size,” said Pickens County head football coach Jack Cook.

Williams uses leverage well, Cook said.

He also plays basketball.

Defensive End

Williams brought quickness and speed to the Pickens County defensive line last season (2006). And his coach believes the “sky is the limit” for Williams.

“He will improve in college,” Cook said. “He accepts challenges real well. We saw that last season where the better the team we faced, the better Williams played.”

Cook admits to a biased view of his player, but a coach has a unique perspective in evaluating the intangibles. In fact, Williams character attributes are what makes Cook and Pickens County proudest.

“They (college coaches) won’t have to worry about where Williams is on Saturday night, or his grades,” Cook said.

Other positive attributes, according to Cook, include: great work ethic, good study habits, and good attitude.

“He is a quiet guy, and a good example,” Cook said.
