Alabama as basketball power?
CBS Sportsline examines the emerging importance of Alabama basketball.

Consequently, the Crimson Tide finally looked like the team some have predicted to make the Final Four, and they did it while improving to 14-2 under some unusual circumstances. How unusual? Consider these two stat lines:
Ron Steele (Alabama): Eight points, four assists and three turnovers.
Glen Davis (LSU): 24 points, 17 rebounds and three blocks

While it was a great win, the team simply must become consistent and mentally tough. To win the SEC you have to win on the road. It is tough, but something this team has to learn how to do. And the team must become consistent. Mark Gottfried has a chance to do something special this season, but the players must live up to their potential.

And since we are talking basketball, you can’t help but mention Saban’s rock star-like appearance.

RECRUITING
The hiring of Nick Saban has boosted recruiting. Alabama is getting attention from many recruits simply because of the name recognition. One such player is Joe McKnight, according to a recruiting expert at Tidesports.com.

National signing day usually holds a couple of surprises, but this class may hold the most surprises to date. One thing is for certain coach Nick Saban knows how to recruit as well as the coaching staff expected on campus for a big recruiting weekend. Tide fans will witness a recruiting explosion in Tuscaloosa as great things come to those who wait. The University of Alabama is on the right track for a very successful recruiting class, now and in the future.

The NCAA has instituted another idiotic rule to harm major college football. According to a story from rivals.com, football coaches cannot even clock recruits during summer camps. Coaches were reportedly upset by the consequences of the new rule at the AFCA meetings. “It is what it is,” Kerin said. “Coaches are not allowed at any event with testing, period,” the story reports.

Assistant coaches
Alabama made some assistant coach hirings official yesterday, according to the Decatur Daily. Kevin Steele, Kirby Smart and Lance Thompson have joined the Crimson Tide football staff, the paper reported, but did not specify the positions for the coaches.
